The Big Bash League 2020/21 will begin on Thursday (10th December), which will be the 10th season of this tournament (BBL 10). In the opening game of this tournament, Hobart Hurricanes will face the defending champions Sydney Sixers at Bellerive Oval (Hobart).

While Sydney Sixers won their second BBL trophy in the last season after beating Melbourne Stars in the final by 19 runs, Hobart Hurricanes ended their BBL 09 journey in the Eliminator after losing against Sydney Thunder by 57 runs.

The two-time runners-up Hobart Hurricanes, who appeared in all the last three BBL seasons’ playoffs, will try to make a positive start in this tournament opener. While their regular captain Matthew Wade is busy to serve for the national team, Peter Handscomb will lead this side in the initial phase of this tournament.

Also, they will miss their wicket-keeper batsman Ben McDermott, who is currently with Australia A team as the replacement of injured Will Pucovski.

Among the latest announced 14-member squad for the tournament opener, Tim David, Peter Handscomb, Colin Ingram, Will Jacks, Charlie Wakim and Nick Winter are the new names for this BBL side.

Among the latest available squad, D’Arcy Short, James Faulkner, Scott Boland, Johan Botha and Colin Ingram are their big names along with the stand-in captain Peter Handscomb.

The two-time BBL champions Sydney Sixers will play this new BBL season as the defending champions. They will start this tournament to stretch their five-match winning streak in the BBL.

Ahead of the tournament opener, Sixers won two practice matches as they beat Adelaide Strikers and Hobart Hurricanes.

As their captain Moises Henriques is currently with the Australia A squad after completing the home limited-overs international series against India, Daniel Hughes will handle the leadership of this team in the early part of this tournament.

Nick Bertus, Daniel Christian, Lawrence Neil-Smith, Tom Rogers and Gurinder Sandhu are the new names of the latest available Sydney Sixers squad. Apart from the Caribbean all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite, English cricketer James Vince and the stand-in skipper, their other big Aussie names are Daniel Christian, Josh Philippe, Stephen O’Keefe, Ben Dwarshuis etc.

Both teams will try their best to start this tournament in a positive fashion. While Sydney Sixers won both the practice matches ahead of the beginning of this tournament, Hobart Hurricanes won four of their last five completed matches against Sixers. Currently, Hurricanes are ahead in the overall head-to-head contest against Sixers by the 6-5 margin.
