But the Caribbean star is still hopeful that he will be a part of the cash-rich league in some capacity, either as a replacement player or in a commentary.

April 03, 2016. West Indies vs England. ICC T20 World Cup Final. Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Chasing 156 to clinch their second world title, the West Indies needed 19 runs off the last six balls. They needed someone to bat out of their skins in order to scale down the target. Enter Carlos Brathwaite.

The burly West Indian did just that and proceeded to hit Ben Stokes for four consecutive sixes in front of the vociferous Eden Gardens crowd as Ian Bishop announced to the world to “Remember the name”. Carlos Brathwaite became an overnight sensation and was eventually awarded a lucrative IPL contract and the captaincy of the West Indian T20I side.

But since then, a slew of inconsistent performances followed and in the past 12 months, Brathwaite has not only lost his place in the West Indies white-ball teams but he also failed to grab an Indian Premier League contract in the auctions held in Kolkata last December.

But the Caribbean star is still hopeful that he will be a part of the cash-rich league in some capacity, either as a replacement player or in a commentary.

“Hopefully I will be in IPL in some capacity may be replacement player or in commentary,” Brathwaite told Delhi-NCR based channel via Instagram Live.

The 31-year-old West Indian had raked in Rs 5 Crore in the 2019 IPL Auction before joining Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 2 Crore in the preceding season.

However, despite raking in a huge sum of money, the opportunities for Brathwaite came few and far in between. While he featured in just two games last season, the all-rounder got just four games in the 2018 season for Sunrisers Hyderabad.

The 2020 IPL auction was full of surprises. While the likes of Chris Morris, who was almost expected to go unsold, raked in Rs 10 Crores, Chris Lynn and Tom Banton had to settle for their base price of Rs 2 Crore.

In the past, the likes of Darren Sammy have resorted to commentary after they went unsold in the auction. Whether we’ll see Brathwaite in the same capacity, is something that remains to be seen. But for that to happen, the IPL has to take place in the first place, which seems unlikely, given the current situation due to COVID-19.
