The decision of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to release Gautam Gambhir and not to buy any established captain in Twenty20 cricket was a big surprise.

The franchise failed to buy any proven captain.

The biggest question for the Kolkata-based franchise is to ink on a captain, who will lead the team in the upcoming cash-rich T20 league.

Among all the players present, Robin Uthappa and Dinesh Karthik seem to be the only candidate for the job.

Amidst all this, a new name has cropped up for the job, and he is none other than Chris Lynn.

On being asked about Lynn being the potential candidate for the job, Jacques Kallis, the Head Coach of the team, said that he is one of the candidates for the captaincy post.

“Yes, he is probably one of the candidates but we haven’t yet decided about it. Maybe, we will get to know in the next couple of weeks,” he said.

With coach still undecided about the captain, this shows that the matter is yet be decided in the franchise.

A few days back, Robin Uthappa said that he would be honoured to take up the job.

Talking about Karthik’s credentials, he has also led his state side Tamil Nadu in past and is one of the candidates for captaincy.

An Indian captain is one of the things which franchises think of but Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals have won IPL with a foreign captain.

Deccan Chargers, the now defunct franchise, also won an IPL title with Adam Gilchrist as skipper.

It cannot be denied that Lynn is a strong candidate for the job but the chances of him given the charge look dim.

The number of injuries he has suffered is one of the major reasons behind it.

No team would want to play under a captain who sits out for a major part of the league.

Also, he is yet to be tested to full in IPL.

He though came with some performances last season but is yet to gain the confidence which many other players have earned.

Should he play the all the matches of the coming season, it will give a clear picture of his abilities in the T20 league.

The upcoming season of IPL is all set to kick off on April 7.

Mumbai Indians will face Chennai Super Kings in the opening contest of the tournament at Wankhede Stadium.

The final will also be played at Wankhede stadium as Mumbai Indians won the last edition of the T20 tournament against Rising Pune Supergiant by a mere run.

BCCI is yet to announce the venue for two of the four playoffs that will be played after the end of the league stage.
