Consistently Playing Risk-Free Cricket Make India Unique: Sanjay Bangar

Team India assistant coach Sanjay Bangar has insisted the team is not at all obsessed with the recent trend of hitting boundaries. The former India allrounder made it clear that the Men in Blue are more focused on strike rotation and playing risk-free cricket. Team India is currently gearing up for forthcoming World Cup, set to start on May 30 in England.

Currently the second-best ODI side in the world, India are one of the firm favourites to lift the title. The upcoming tournament is widely considered as an open one with no clear favourites. The majority believes that most of the ten participating teams are capable enough to win the tournament. Moreover, this World Cup is looking destined to witness some high-scoring games.

The ongoing series between England and Pakistan has already made it more or less clear about what to expect in the World Cup. In two of the three games so far, both the teams have scored more than 350 while in the other remaining game Pakistan scored 340 while batting first before England chased it down with ease. But despite the high-scoring games in recent times, Sanjay Bangar has said the team is just focussing on its own strength and game-plan.

“We’ve our own internal parameters as to how to approach ODIs. If we come close to those parameters, we should be fine,” Bangar told Bangalore Mirror.

“What makes the Indian team unique is that it’s consistently playing risk-free cricket. And that’s because we emphasise on the ones and the twos. As a batting group, we are not obsessed over the number of boundaries we’ve hit. But we discuss strike-rotation a great deal. Which is why we’re able to eschew risks,” he added.

All the World Cup-bound players for India recently played in the IPL. And ahead of the 50-over World Cup, Bangar advised them to come out of that T20 mode.

“In T20, you’re all the time expecting what the bowler will bowl. You end up planning beforehand looking at field placements… The go-to balls for most bowlers are analysed in detail. Batsmen start expecting such deliveries,” said Bangar.

“In 50 overs where you have more time and are getting 300 deliveries instead of 120, you need to be mindful of not premeditating shots for the major part of the innings,” he added.

India, meanwhile, will open their World Cup campaign on June 5 against South Africa. Before the main event, the Men in Blue will also play a couple of warm-up games.
