It has been more than one year since Jayant Yadav had last played for India.

He is not in contention to make a comeback at present but was still given a contract by the BCCI.

He made his ODI debut during the last game of the series against New Zealand in 2016 and is yet to play another ODI.

In Tests, he had scored plenty of runs and took wickets to show in four games he had played but played his last Test last year in February.

His Test numbers are good, as in six innings, he had scored 228 runs at 45.60 consisting of one century and one half-century. Apart from it, he also has 11 wickets to his name.

Although, he hasn’t played any first-class game since his last Test. He was in India A squad for the tour of South Africa but had to withdraw due to personal reasons.

An injury kept him out for full Ranji season, and he only made a comeback during Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

Since his comeback, he has come up with nominal performances and is not in contention to get selected in the national team presently. Also, getting a central contract came as a big surprise to him.

He is also the part of the Rest of India squad for Irani Cup, which also raised few eyebrows but continues backing from selectors shows he is in the scheme of things.

He is a proven all-rounder, who had shown he could bat as bow well with efficiency. Though, he is not in the recking at the moment.

By handing a contract to him, the team management has shown they have their keen eye for Jayant, and the Haryana all-rounder should be ready for a comeback anytime.

Apart from Jayant, there were few more surprises on the contract list.

First was the comeback of Suresh Raina, who hasn’t played an ODI since 2015, though he is pushing for selection in the ODI side.

The non-inclusion of Shreyas Iyer was also a big surprise.

He made his place in the national side on the back of his form for India A, but as soon as Virat Kohli came back for South Africa tour as ODI captain, Iyer was dropped from the T20I side and dropped from playing XI of ODIs.

The contract indicates he might be in the scheme of things for 2019 World Cup while Jayant surely is a player whom selectors have their keen eye on.
