Veteran South African batsman AB De Villiers broke the deadlock as he completed his 22nd Test century and helped his team take a 139 runs lead in the first innings. De Villiers brought free-flowing and fearless less approach to the wicket as he took the attack to the Australian fast bowlers.

De Villiers scored at a remarkable strike rate of 86.30 as he scored 126 off just 146 deliveries on a wicket which had a lot to offer for the bowlers.

De Villiers came to the crease when the Australian bowlers were making most of the reverse-swing available. De Villiers survived a lethal spell of fast bowling by the Australian pace trio. The fall of wickets at the other end did not affect De Villiers’s concentration as he continued playing his shots.

The 34-year-old hit 20 boundaries and one huge six en route his 126 runs innings. This hundred also ended De Villiers’s long wait of getting to the three-figure mark as this was his first Test century in over three years.
