Cricket West Indies (CWI) has handed central contracts to three young cricketers – Nichols Pooran, Fabian Allen, and Oshane Thomas for the 2019-20 season. All the cricketers made significant contributions in the ICC World Cup 2019 despite their dismal run in the tournament. Besides, CWI has also handed central contracts to 15 female cricketers.
The CWI has divided the contracts for the male cricketers into three categories – all format, red-ball format, and white-ball format. Alongside skipper Jason Holder and Darren Bravo, Alzarri Joseph, Keemo Paul, Kemar Roach, Shai Hope, and Shimron Hetmyer have bagged the all-format contract. West Indies cricket board has increased the number of contracts in the all-form category from four to seven. The white-ball group has three significant addition in Pooran, Thomas, and Allen.
Nicholas Pooran, who came into the limelight during the u19 World Cup, had an outstanding Worl Cup. He finished as the highest run-getter for West Indies including a century. Fabian Allen made his ODI debut after a strong outing in the Global T20 Canada. Oshane Thomas has also looked good bowling at a good pace during the World Cup.
John Campbell, who left an impact with an outstanding century against England on debut, earlier this year, has earned a red-ball contract. The young left-arm spinner, Jomel Warrican has also bagged a contract alongside Kraigg Brathwaite, Shane Dowrich, Shannon Gabriel, and Roston Chase.
Interim Chairman of West Indies selection panel, Robert Haynes said that the contract provides a multi-talented pool of cricketers across the format throughout the season. He also added that the players can help to develop their cricket going forward.
“We believe the 2019-20 contract list provides us with a multi-talented group of players who can represent West Indies men and women across all formats over the contract period,” Haynes said. “We believe the mix of players selected are important for the development of our teams going forward and we have looked to award contracts to players who have shown commitment and performance during the past year,” he added.
