Slack went on a tour to The Gambia for a Cavaliers XI in 1988-89 [following tours to Israel and Barbados] for a friendly tour. In a match at Banjul on January 15, 1989, Slack suddenly collapsed while batting. He was rushed to the hospital. He never recovered. He was only 34 years old.

Post-mortem reports eventually revealed a damaged artery — something that had gone unnoticed over the years. With heart screening still in its nascent stage, Slack’s problem was never diagnosed.
