Harbhajan Singh has turned 38 on Wednesday.

Veteran off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has turned 38 on Tuesday, and as expected, the messages poured in from all quarters for the Turbanator.

One of the best spinners to have played for the country, Harbhajan Singh was the spin spearhead of the national team not very long ago.

The off-spinner was a part of some of the nation’s most significant wins this century. Harbhajan marked his arrival at the highest stage by blowing away the all-conquering Australia in the 2001 Test series.

In just three games, he picked up 32 wickets, including the first Test hat-trick by an Indian, while none of his team-mates managed more than three. He was a part of the team that won the inaugural World T20 in 2007 and the 2001 World Cup.

He was expected to be India’s lead spinner in the all three forms of the game after Anil Kumble’s retirement. However, he lost his regular place in the team following a run of poor form. After the 2011 World Cup, Harbhajan only played in bits and parts. The experienced spinner last played in India jersey was in 2016 during a T20I match against the United Arab Emirates in Dhaka.

But his struggles towards the latter part of his career should not undermine his achievements.

The off-spinner represented India in 103 Tests, 236 ODIs and 28 T20Is. In Tests, he picked up a staggering 417 wickets in addition to scoring two tons and nine fifties. In ODIs and T20Is, he picked up 269 and 25 wickets, respectively.

His feisty character made him one of the most loved cricketers in this cricket-obsessed nation. And as he turned 38, the cricketing fraternity did not waste time in wishing him.
