Chennai Super Kings [CSK] have been consigned to their third consecutive defeat in the IPL for the first time since 2014 after they failed to nail down yet another run-chase against a brilliant SunRisers Hyderabad [SRH] attack despite the presence of MS Dhoni in the end.

CSK got off to a horrendous start to their run-chase as they not only struggled to keep up with the required run-rate but they also lost wickets at consistent intervals. Watson and Kedar Jadhav’s poor form continued while Ambati Rayudu and Faf du Plessis failed to emulate their past exploits as the Super Kings slumped to 4-42 in the 9th over.

Both MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja struggled for their timing in the first 20-25 balls of their partnership, meaning that CSK needed a miracle at the backend to seal the run-chase. Jadeja strokes some lusty blows to bring up his maiden half-century in T20 cricket before eventually holing out. Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s injury meant David Warner had to turn to Abdul Samad for the final over and when the rookie gave away five wides on his very first ball, it looked like MSD would once again wind back the clock to 2016. But, as he admitted in the post-match interview, he was trying to hit the ball too hard and hence couldn’t get any sort of timing. Samad held on to his nerves brilliantly as he didn’t allow both Curran and Dhoni to swing their arms, ensuring that by the time the last ball was bowled, the game was over.

Priyam Garg and Abhishek Sharma led the way for SRH against CSK

Earlier, SunRisers Hyderabad recovered brilliantly after a mid-inning wobble thanks to a brilliant 77-run-stand between Priyam Garg and Abhishek Sharma.

SRH had got off to a slow start and it looked like they would end up with a below-par total after they lost back-to-back wickets of skipper David Warner and Kane Williamson in the 10th over. While Warner was brilliantly caught by Faf du Plessis at the boundary, Kane Williamson misjudged a single and was eventually run-out after Garg did not respond to the call.

Garg, however, displayed his class to the hilt as he painted the Dubai International Stadium with his dazzling strokeplay. Garg, along with Abhishek Sharma, who played an equally brilliant knock, ensured that SRH scored 73 runs in the final five overs to eventually post 5-164 in 20 overs.
