South Africa, on Saturday, recalled their veteran pacer Dale Steyn for the upcoming three-match T20I series against England. Quinton de Kock will lead the team once again while Faf du Plessis continue to remain absent from the T20I side. On the tour of India too, South Africa had dropped du Plessis from the T20I squad.

Dale Steyn, meanwhile, last played a T20I in March 2019 but was in action for the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League recently. South Africa’s all-time leading Test wicket-taker retired from Tests to prolong his career but did not receive much support from his national team before the latest call-up. He was surprisingly not considered for the tour of India right after the World Cup.

There were also maiden call-ups for batsman Pite van Biljon and seamer Sisanda Magala. Magala’s selection, however, is conditional and depends on passing a fitness test that he will take ahead of the first match in next week. Van Biljon, on the other hand, impressed with his consistent performances over the last 24 months in domestic circuit. The 30-year old averaged 48.00 in his seven innings of the 2019 Mzansi Super League.

“We are pleased with the group that we have selected for this upcoming T20 series against England. We have once again taken the opportunity to reward some of the hard workers of our domestic franchise system while some of our key senior players continue with their much-needed rest period and we have again, put our faith in Quinton (de Kock) to lead this group of exciting cricketers, picking up where he left off in India where he showed exemplary leadership,” CSA Acting Director of Cricket, Graeme Smith said.

South Africa and England are currently busy playing the ODI series. The hosts are leading the series after winning the first game before the second game was abandoned due to poor weather.
