Former West Indies skipper Darren Sammy is all set to take his love for Pakistan to a different level. The two-time T20 World Cup-winning captain is arguably the most loved overseas cricketer in Pakistan and understandably so. In the last few years when Pakistan have been trying tirelessly to convince players and teams to visit their country, Darren Sammy has never shied away from visiting Pakistan.

In 2017, he was one of the very few overseas players who visited Pakistan for the final of the Pakistan Super League. Darren Sammy became an instant fan favourite by leading Peshawar Zalmi to title glory. He was also the first overseas player to reach Pakistan for the ongoing season.

And the allrounder is now all set to become a Pakistani national. While praising the Caribbean star, Peshawar Zalmi owner Javed Afrid revealed that Darren Sammy has applied for Pakistan nationality.

“We have requested for the honorary citizenship of Pakistan for Daren Sammy. The application is currently at President’s table. I request the PCB chairman to put in a good word for Sammy, so it can be approved. Sammy’s voice notes were too emotional for Pakistan when PCB was trying to hold the PSL season 2 finale in Lahore,” said Javed Afridi as quoted by cricketpakistan.com.pk.

Meanwhile, the fifth edition of the league got underway on Thursday (February 20) with defending champions Quetta Gladiators taking on Islamabad United in Lahore. The Gladiators started their title defence in a convincing manner by beating the Islamabad-based outfit by three wickets.

Asked to bat first, Islamabad United scored 168. In reply, the Gladiators chased down the total inside 19 overs thanks to a blazing fifty from Azam Khan.
