Australia’s stand-in skipper David Warner will get a breather ahead of Australia’s next fixture. Meanwhile, Australia will fly to New Zealand for the next T20 tri-series match.

Warner with his energetic captaincy has led Australia to an unbeaten start in the series. Australia’ seven-wicket victory over England ensured them a spot in the final.

However, Warner has failed to get going with the bat. In addition, Warner has scored only 12 runs in the first three fixtures of the tri-series. His poor run continues from the ODI series against England, where he averaged below 15.

Warner to take rest:

The 31-year-old Warner is the only member to play all the three formats for the Aussies this summer. Warner looked extremely tired as failed to score runs with the bat. Australian head coach Darren Lehmann revealed that Warner will take a break before Australia’s next match on Friday against the Kiwis.

Meanwhile, Warner will appear at the Allan Border Medal count in Melbourne before flying home to Sydney on Tuesday. The remaining squad will fly to New Zealand on Tuesday while Warner will join them later in Auckland.

It will just give him a couple of days at home really,” Lehmann said. “It’s always a challenge with the schedule as it is, but David is really keen to play as a captain. So we’ll give him a couple of days off and get him to New Zealand the day before the game,” he added.

Lehmann applauds Warner’s captaincy skills:

With regular captain enjoying a break, Warner has taken the captaincy role. Lehmann admitted Warner’s leadership in the tri-series had been crucial for Australia’s new look T20 team. In addition, he was confident about Warner getting back to form.

He’d obviously like some more runs but he’s been fantastic in the leadership role with the young guys,” Lehmann said. “He’s been training hard, there are no dramas at the moment. He can only do so much work. He’s been working so hard that it’s almost like (it would help) to just give him a couple of days away from the game,” Lehmann stated.

Ricky Ponting (Australia’s assistant coach) has been doing some really good work with him, so we’d expect him to come out of that rut pretty quickly,” Lehmann concluded.
