The decision on the 2021 ICC Women’s World Cup will be taken in two weeks’ time, New Zealand Cricket chairman Greg Barclay said on Tuesday.

Barclay’s comments after the International Cricket Council [ICC] in its latest meeting said the tournament is still on as per schedule. In the same meeting, the apex body postponed this years T20 World Cup to 2022.

Barclay said that a decision on the future of the 50-over Women’s World Cup will be taken in two weeks’ time so that in case of Greg the tournament does go ahead, all the necessary preparations can kickstart and vice-versa.

“>The decision (about the ODI World Cup) will be made in the next two weeks,” Greg Barclay told Radio New Zealand. “…because if there is a need to postpone that event then obviously we need to know that sooner rather than later and likewise if it is to go ahead then we need to make a final decision so that we can throw all the resources necessary to run a first-class world event in February.”

New Zealand hasn’t been as badly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic but the travel ban restriction and the need to quarantine all the teams once they enter the country is a logistical as well as safety challenge.

“How do you get teams traveling around the world, they’ve got to the hub through other countries, and what are the implications of that?” Barclay reckoned.

“Then getting them through the quarantine restrictions that may be in place and of course all of that comes with a cost and so there are budgetary implications heading into February (but) all of that is surmountable,” he added.
