Team India pacer Deepak Chahar has been on a rollercoaster ride ever since he made his international debut in 2018. This year was more productive in terms of performances, and the experiences have prompted Chahar to be selective about the games he plays to survive for a long time.

The cricketer from Rajasthan first grabbed eyeballs playing for Rising Pune Supergiant in the Indian Premier League. He went strength to strength under the leadership of MS Dhoni who brought him to Chennai Super Kings. After helping Chennai lift the third title in 2018, Deepak Chahar once again showed outstanding form in the next season despite Chennai finishing second. His stints with the Indian team has also been very significant mainly in T20Is as he claimed the best figures including a hat-trick against Bangladesh.

Need to selective about matches: Deepak Chahar

But Chahar had to end the year on a sad note after he was ruled out of the final ODI against West Indies with a stress fracture on his lower back. Currently, he is on a rehabilitation process in a bid to return to cricket. Speaking about the injury, Chahar cited that it is because of playing excessive matches in the last two years.

“The stress fracture in my back is mainly due to playing excess matches,” Chahar told The Telegraph. “Before the Ranji Trophy began, I was playing almost all matches. In fact, it’s been happening like this for the past two years. So I have to be a bit selective now. Else, I won’t be able to survive,” he added.

Deepak Chahar returned to domestic cricket soon after the series against Bangladesh and was an immediate hit. He pointed out the playing a lot of games during a short period took a toll on the body. Meanwhile, the injury will keep Chahar out of action for a long time, and he is likely to return during the Indian Premier League.

“The problem was, after the Bangladesh series where we played three matches in seven days, I started playing the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy, where the gaps between each game were very short. So if I have to play, say eight to nine games in 12 days, that is more difficult. Therefore, in these cases, I need to be selective. These situations are more harmful to the body kyunki aap lagaatar khel rahe ho (because you are continuously playing),” Chahar concluded.
