India’s young batting sensation, Devdutt Padikkal maintained that he wants to play Test cricket for India in the foreseeable future. The country-wide lockdown due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis has given the teenager a break from cricket after what has been a roller-coaster ride for him with Karnataka.

In his first full-fledged season at the senior level, left-handed opener made all the right noises. The 19-year-old from Bengaluru topped the batting charts in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy tournament with 580 runs.

Padikkal has now said that in the short-term he is focussed on doing well for Karnataka and in the long run he wants to don Indian colours, especially in Test cricket.

“My short term would definitely be to continue to do well for Karnataka. I want to try and make a mark for RCB when I get a chance to play in the IPL. My long-term goal is obviously to play for India. Test cricket is something that I have always admired and that will be my ultimate goal,” Padikkal said.

Devdutt Padikkal Has Had A Grand Home Season

The teenager went on to finish on top of the charts in Vijay Hazare Trophy as well, amassing 609 runs, including two hundred as Karnataka completed the domestic limited-overs double. In the Ranji Trophy, Devdutt Padikkal scored 649 runs at an average of little over 40. He was the highest run-getter for Karnataka who reached the semi-final to complete an excellent domestic run last season.

The experience of playing with some of the established India stars in the Karnataka team has done Devdutt a world of good. The confident teenager opener says playing Test match cricket is his long-term goal and that he is keen on continuing to do well for Karnataka.

The youngster, who was part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) set-up in 2019, has had the valuable experience of watching the likes of Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers from close quarters. Devdutt Padikkall is hungry for more success.
