The rise of social media platforms have brought the cricketers and their fans closer than ever. The cricketers keep their fans updated about their daily lives by posting on the social media platforms while the fans also return the favour by praising their beloved cricketers.

But every coin has two sides and social media platforms are not an exception either. The trolls have used the platforms to abuse the cricketers on a number of occasions and something similar happened with former India allrounder Irfan Pathan on Thursday.

A Twitter user compared Irfan Pathan with terrorist Hafiz Saeed. The Islamist terrorist, who operates from Pakistan, was the mastermind behind the 2008 Mumbai attacks that killed 164 civilians.

“@IrfanPathan is not hiding his ambitions to become the next Hafiz Saeed at all..this shit is disgusting,” wrote the user while replying to a tweet in which another user had taken a dig at Irfan Pathan.

Irfan Pathan noticed the tweet and was quick to respond to it. The 2007 T20 World Cup-winning allrounder expressed his utter shock over the tweet as he replied: “This is the mentality of certain ppl. Where have we reached ? #shame #disgusted.”

Irfan Pathan, meanwhile, retired from all forms of cricket earlier this year in January.  In the early years of his career, Irfan Pathan was considered by many as the most talented swing and seam bowler to emerge from India since Kapil Dev. He picked up a Test hat-trick in Pakistan in 2006 and still remains the only bowler to do so in the very over of a match.

In 2007, he was the Man of the Match when India beat Pakistan in the final of the inaugural 2007 T20 World Cup. But his career did not pan out on an expected note as he played his last Test way back in 2008 while his last ODI and T20I appearance came in 2012.
