Sanju Samson has had a roller-coaster of a career so far. Despite being just 24, the Kerala star has experienced quite a number of lows in his eventful career. He lost his place in the Kerala team once for disciplinary reasons and had also some fitness issues. On Thursday, he made it to the Indian team once again thanks to his consistent displays in domestic arena. Sanju Samson is no stranger to playing for India.

He had earned his maiden India call-up way back in 2014 when he was just 18. The stylish batsman was included in the squad for the England tour but he could not make his debut. In the following year, he made his debut against Zimbabwe but was dropped after that tour which started the long wait for another call-up from the national team.

Back in the team now, Sanju Samson has said he is at peace with his flaws and doesn’t try to be the “perfect batsman” that he wanted to be earlier. The right-handed batsman said that his roller-coaster of a career has taught him a lot.

“You rightly said it has been a roller-coaster ride for me. If you have a very safe and easy career there are very less things you will learn. I have learnt a lot in the last four to five years. If you you have failed a lot of times then you know how to rise up and how to succeed. I have failed a lot of times in my life so I know how to stand up and perform. That has been a blessing,” Sanju Samson was quoted as saying by India Today.

Like others, Sanju Samson too had high expectations from himself but not anymore. He also has no hard feelings about getting just one international game so far to prove himself.

“I don’t have any regrets. As I said I have gone through a lot of ups and downs. I had lots of high expectations about myself that I should have performed much better than what I did.

“… That I should have got into the team much before, but lately, I understood that everything has its own time and you have to be patient for your turn. I have been doing that and have become a better person in the process.

“Have really enjoyed my tough times, to be honest. I have understood who all are with me genuinely and who are not,” he added.

Sanju Samson further said that he has understood his game well and is in a better position at the moment. The Kerala star is definitely in fine form at the moment. A couple of months ago, he had impressed for India A against South Africa A. Recently, he also scored a List A double century in Vijay Hazare Trophy.

“Mentally and technically many changes have happened in the last five years. I have understood my game a lot more, a lot abut myself as a person. I have worked on my strengths and not tried to be the perfect batsman that I tried be for a long time. I understood that no one can be a perfect batsman. Now I keep it simple and enjoy my cricket,” he said.

With Virat Kohli rested for the series, Sanju Samson is likely to get a chance in the playing eleven although as a specialist batsman. He is already rated highly by most and if he manages to deliver, then it can do a world of good to his start-stop career.

An avid cricket lover, I just love this game more than anything. Writing about cricket keeps me closer to the game.
