It would not be entirely wrong to assume that Ishan Kishan does not feature prominently in the selectors’ plans as far as his chances in the national team are concerned. While the wicketkeeper-batsman is definitely on the fringe at the moment, he needs to do really well to brighten up his chances.

For the time being, he is well below in the pecking order. His former U19 teammate Rishabh Pant is currently the top-choice wicketkeeper-batsman across formats. Pant has sealed his place in the Test team after some impressive performances in England and Australia last season. Wriddhiman Saha is breathing down his neck in Tests.

In limited-overs format too, Pant is likely to get an extended run as the team has finally started to look beyond MS Dhoni. Recent media reports also suggested that the selectors are keeping a keen eye on highly-talented Sanju Samson. Thus, it is very clear that Ishan Kishan really needs to do very well to improve his chances.

But while the Jharkhand star has his eyes set on the national team, he is not looking too far. He is currently trying to focus on putting up some consistent performances. The southpaw is presently playing for India A in the ongoing one-day series against South Africa A.

“I think it is obviously there in the back of the mind (the talk) that I have to be there in the senior team. Any youngster would want to represent the country. But at the same time, I want to focus on my process. I need to get better day-by-day. If I think a lot about senior team selection, I will only be burdening myself with additional pressure” Kishan was quoted as saying by Times of India.

“So what I do is to keep the process going. I need to work on my consistency. When I play domestic matches or for India ‘A’, I have to keep on performing well and obviously then the selectors will pick you (to the national squad),” he added.
