Durham has roped in the services of exciting Australia opener D’Arcy Short for the upcoming Vitality Blast Twenty20 campaign. The southpaw is regarded as one of the most exciting batting talents in the world especially in the shortest format of the game. He is one of the most exciting white ball batters. He can also bowl left-arm chinaman and is a terrific fielder. Hence he will be an important member for Durham in the forthcoming tournament.

The southpaw in all likelihood is expected to make his debut for Durham in the county’s opening fixture against the Northants Steelbacks at home. The 28-year-old left-handed batsmen have made 24 international appearances for Australia. He boasts of an impressive average of 32.88 in international T20’s. Short is Durham’s 2nd overseas signing. The southpaw made his ODI debut for Australia against England at Cardiff last year. He has featured in the Australian limited overs squad in the recent past. Earlier in the year, Short’s knock of 76 of 44 deliveries helped Australia chase down the highest target of 244 against New Zealand.

Short made a name for himself in the Big Bash League. Since then there has been no looking back for the young left-hander. He is known for his aggressive batting style and unique bowling style. Short is an important feature of the Hobart Hurricanes squad in the BPL. Due to his exploits, Short was picked by Rajasthan Royal in last year’s auction.

Short has performed quite admirably in the BBL. He scored 637 runs and bagged 10 wickets which also saw him named the Player of the Tournament for the 2nd time in succession. Short revealed that he can’t wait to play for Durham. He further added that he always wanted to play in England and is very excited to be part of the Durham squad.

“I can’t wait to get over to Durham and play some cricket,” said Short, “Playing in England is something that I have wanted to do for a while and I’m very excited to get started.

“It’s very much a new experience for me and a challenge to play on some different grounds, wickets, pitches and against some new bowlers.

“It’s nice to have Bangers (Bancroft) who I already know from the Australia set-up and Northy (Marcus North) at Durham, as it’s always a help to have some extra support when you arrive at a new place. Both of them were a big factor in me choosing to join up with Durham Cricket this summer.

“It didn’t take too much persuasion for me to decide to spend my summer in the North-East and I’m looking forward to meeting the lads,” Short said.

Short will look to make his opportunity count when he goes out to play for Durham. The southpaw will surely want to continue his rich vein of form in the recent past. It will be interesting to see whether he makes it to the Australian World Cup squad.
