Alastair Cook could reportedly be forced to sit out the final England vs India Test, getting underway on September 7 at The Oval.

Cook, one of England’s greatest-ever Test players and definitely their most-decorated, will represent England one more time before bringing down curtains on his illustrious career. There is no denying that the cricketing world would be desperate to watch Cook bat in international game one more time.

However, the left-handed batsman could miss the much-anticipated game, according to reports. The reason behind it is that his wife Alice is about to have their third child – an event which may yet coincide with his final game. As a result, Cook could well head the the Hospital instead of the The Oval.

Cook was also doubtful for the fourth Test for the same reason but then went on to play the game.

But if Cook gets the chance to play, he will be hoping to go out on a high. England have already wrapped up the series after winning the fourth Test to take an unassailable 3-1 lead. Cook has been named in England’s 13-man squad for the last Test.

The southpaw, meanwhile, has endured a terrible time in the ongoing series. He has looked like a pale shadow of his usual self. His scores in this series read – 13, 0, 21, 29, 17, 17 and 12. In the ongoing year, he has scored at an average of just 18.62 in nine Tests – which is his lowest year-wise since he made his debut in 2006. With not pressure on him now, Cook will be keen to bow out on a high.

Cook is retiring from the game as England’s most decorated batsman in Tests. He has played more Tests, scored more runs and more centuries than any England cricketer in history.
