England Regain No One Spot In ODIs Rankings, India Drop To No 2

Just days after losing their number one spot in ICC ODI rankings, England have reclaimed that position. The World Cup hosts have displaced India to regain the number uno position in the rankings. England had lost the top spot after suffering two consecutive defeats in the World Cup. While England had lost to Sri Lanka and Australia, second-placed India had won all of their games in the tournament till that stage.

However, England have moved back to that position after beating India on Sunday. England beat the Men in Blue by 31 runs to end the latter’s unbeaten run in the World Cup. Batting first, England piled up a massive total of 337 for 6 in the allotted 50 overs. In reply, India finished on 306 for 5 despite Rohit Sharma’s fine ton and Virat Kohli’s fighting fifty. Both the teams remain on course for the semifinals.

Talking about the rankings, England are at the top with 123 points, leading India by 122 points. New Zealand, Australia and South Africa complete the top five.  Pakistan are at the sixth spot with 96 points, trailing South Africa by 13 points. Pakistan are followed by Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Afghanistan.

With just point separating India from England, the Virat Kohli-led side will have a chance to seal the number one spot if they do well in the competition. Talking about the ongoing World Cup, only Australia have sealed their place in the last four. For the three remaining spots – India, New Zealand, England, Pakistan and Bangladesh are in contention.

India and New Zealand just need one point to make it to the semifinal while England can also make it to the last four if they beat New Zealand in their final game. In that case, New Zealand will have to depend on other results to make it the next round.
