David Willey was the unlucky man to make way for Jofra Archer in England’s World Cup squad. Willey was named in England’s provisional squad while Archer was not. However, as soon as Archer made his international debut and impressed with his express pace, speculations were rife that he would get the nod for the marquee event.

The Barbados-born allrounder has so far only played three one-day internationals, bowling just 22 overs for his adopted country. But England are certain he can be their missing link. And in order to make room for Archer, they dropped Willey who played an important role in the nation’s incredible transformation as an ODI powerhouse since the disastrous outing in the last World Cup.

In the last four years, Willey played 46 ODIs and emerged as one of England’s most reliable bowlers in pressure situations. But while he did not do much wrong, he was just unlucky to be outgunned by a player with more pace. Moreover, several former England players also endorsed for Archer which too have played a part when England selectors sat down to decide on the final eleven.

With the wickets in the World Cup set to be flat and thus batting friendly, Archer seemed like the wise choice and England did not hesitate in giving him the nod while breaking Willey’s heart. Following the snub, Willey took to Twitter to express his disappointment. At the same time, he also wished his teammates good luck, writing:

“What can I say, I’m absolutely gutted. Still 100% behind the lads. On a positive…..still winning at life”

England, meanwhile, will be taking on South Africa in the tournament-opener on May 30. Currently the best ranked ODI side in the world, England are the firm favourites to win the World Cup. They will be riding high on confidence after thrashing Pakistan 4-0 in the recently-concluded ODI series.
