England vs India 2018, Lord's
Chris Woakes' hundred has put England on top against India in the second Test match at Lord's.

England finished day three of the second Test against India at Lord’s on a high riding on Chris Woakes and Jonny Bairstow’s excellent partnership to go 250 runs ahead.

Meanwhile, England openers Keaton Jennings and Alastair Cook started on luxury with India seamers offering too many on their pads. Initially, they soon found their range, and later both fell within the space of six deliveries. Jennings pinned in front by a full delivery from Shami and Cook having his edge snaffled by a rising seaming corker from Ishant.

It brought the debutant Ollie Pope on the crease along with England skipper Joe Root. Pope looked confident and played some gorgeous looking shots during his short stay at the crease. On the other hand, Joe Root looked uncomfortable throughout his stay. Furthermore, his wicket at the stroke of lunch gave India the hope of keeping England in check.

Jos Buttler came and played a 22-ball 24 runs cameo which took England to the lead. Bairstow started skittishly, but Woakes’ held his stance at the crease. Though classified now as a bowling all-rounder, he has a technique that of a top-order batsman.

While he brought a spectacular hundred, Bairstow had to be content with a well made 93, as he edged one off Hardik Pandya. Sam Curran entered and quickly reached 22 runs with a couple of full tosses from Kuldeep Yadav before bad light brought a premature close to proceedings.

The day closed with England 250 runs ahead with four wickets in hand, the hosts are once again on the driver seat.

Here are the statistical highlights from day three of the second Test between England and India:

  • Ollie Pope is the third youngest cricketer to bat at the Lord’s Cricket Ground at the age of 20 years and 221 days. The youngest one was Denis Compton at the age of 20 year and 32 days in 1938.

  • Ishant Sharma completes his 400 first-class wickets with the wicket of England opener Alastair Cook.

  • It is the second time an opposition player batting at No. 7 has outscored India’s total. Godfrey Evans did it for the first time in Manchester in 1958 when he scored 71 runs. And now, Chris Woakes with his 120* is the second batsmen to achieve this feat.
