The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will soon conduct the interviews to decide on the head coach of the Indian cricket team. Ravi Shastri, the present head coach, is favourite to keep the job and it will be a tough task for other contenders in the list to take his spot.

Let us have a look at five biggest reasons why Shastri is set to keep his job as team India’s head coach –

It is well-known that Kohli and Shastri share a good rapport. When Shastri joined team India’s backroom staff in 2014, Kohli was appointed as the captain of India’s Test team after Dhoni’s retirement. Shastri has always been a fan of Kohli’s style of play.

In 2017, when BCCI invited applications for the head coach job, Shastri did not apply for it and only threw his hat in the ring after Anil Kumble resigned. It was reported that he had the backing of Kohli and then CAC member Sachin Tendulkar.

India have may have failed to win two World Cup titles under Shastri but all in all, they have done well.India became the first team earlier this year to defeat Australia in Australia in a Test series.

Yes, Virat Kohli and co did suffer defeat against England and South Africa in away series – though there were many positives in those defeats.

The margins of defeats in England were quite less and team India can do the job on the next tour. in South Africa, India lost first two Tests but defeated the home side on the toughest track in the third game.

Kohli and Shastri must have charted out their plans for the next two ICC events for sure and it will be good if the duo is given another chance to win a World Cup. Next year’s T20 World Cup takes place in Australia while the 2021 World Cup will be played in India.

Only one strong Indian challenger:

Robin Singh

As per reports, only Robin Singh is the biggest Indian name who has thrown his hat in the ring for the top-most position. It isn’t that foreign coaches are any less than Indian coaches but they surely do not know Indian team inside out.

Neither Tom Moody nor Mike Hesson – top two foreign contenders for the job – have worked with Kohli and with big events coming up, it could prove to be risky if there’s a change in coach. Robin Singh could be a strong contender for the job.

CAC’s backing:

Anshuman Gaekwad.

Even before the deadline to apply for the job ended, CAC member Anshuman Gaekwad had backed Shastri to remain in the position. In fact, he also said that all positions expect Shastri’s were open. So it is now almost sure that Shastri will keep his job as he has the backing of Kohli and has already impressed one of the CAC members.
