Former India cricketer Kapil Dev recently was fined by a court for allowing a con couple to use his photograph and goodwill in an advertisement campaign of selling membership of Sunstar Club, which has turned out to be a fraud.

Meanwhile, Kapil is not the only one at the receiving end of this. Bollywood star Govinda and Ravi Kishan also attracted a similar amount of fines. Last year, 18 citizens, who lost lakhs of rupees in the scheme, had approached Vadodara District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum against Sunstar promoters Raman Kapoor and his wife Seema and the three celebrities.

However, Kapil Dev is one of the best all-rounders to grace this country. He also brought many laurels for his country including the 1983 World Cup. Kapil led the side brilliantly to create the major upset of the tournament. The former Indian captain played international cricket for 16 years (1978-1994) and has 687 international wickets to his name.

On Saturday, the forum directed Kapil Dev, Govinda, and Ravi Kishan to pay Rs 15,000 each to all 18 complainants. The forum also stated that they had resorted to unfair trade practices. The forum also directed the Kapoor couples to compensate the victims of the fraud.

As per the complainants, they had paid between Rs 1.2 lakh to Rs 3 lakh in membership fees to the club in 2016. The club assured them of various benefits in lieu, including a free stay at the clubhouse. But when they tried to avail the benefits a year later, they did not get any response from the club. They then filed police cases against the Kapoors in Ahmedabad and Vadodara.

The cricketer turned commentator is currently seen in the ongoing ODI series between India and Windies.
