Former India Fielding Coach Robin Singh Applies For Head Coach Job

Former India all-rounder Robin Singh has thrown his hat in the ring to become the next head coach of the Indian cricket team, he confirmed to The Hindu. Robin is a well-established coach an has coached number of teams since retiring from the game. He fulfils each and every criteria laid down by BCCI and will be one of the strongest candidates to take over the job.

He has also served as team India’s fielding coach in past – from 2007 to 2009. His is presently a part of Mumbai Indians’ coaching staff, where he joined as chief coach in 2010. He has also coached Deccan Chargers, India A cricket team, India U-19 cricket team, USA and many other franchises in T20 leagues around the world.

Robin will give a tough competition to Ravi Shastri, who is the favourite to retain the job. If Robin gets selected as the head coach of the Indian cricket team, he will have to quit his position at Mumbai Indians.

He played a total of 136 ODIs and 1 Test match for India. In domestic cricket, Robin represented Tamil Nadu. He has become first former cricketer to apply for the post of head coach. A report had suggested that Mike Hesson is likely to apply for the job but nothing has been confirmed as of yet.

Though Jonty Rhodes has already confirmed that he has applied for the fielding coach of Indian cricket team while J Arun Kumar has also applied for batting coach. Since the head coach will not be picking his staff, BCCI also advertised for various positions and changes can be made to Shastri’s staff even if he retains the job.

The last day to apply for various positions is July 30 and till now, just a handful of former cricketers have joined the race. The job advertisement has received a cold response till now.

Meanwhile, a report in PTI suggested that Bharat Arun is likely to keep his job as bowling coach due to his brilliant performance since taking over. Looking at team India’s pace attack, Men in Blue have a great set of pacers and a great bench-strength as well. Hence, he is likely to keep his job even if there are changes in the present staff.
