Former Zimbabwe all-rounder Sean Ervine retired from all forms of professional cricket on Saturday (September 1) with immediate effect. Ervine had moved out of Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) way back in 2004. He went on to represent his country in five Tests and 42 One-day Internationals.

The all-rounder made a significant change during his career when he went ahead and signed a contract with Hampshire in the English County Championship. He leaves the scene with a great First-class record. He finished with 11,390 runs along with 280 wickets.

Ervine also scored 5,716 runs and bagged 206 wickets in List A cricket. Meanwhile, the all-rounder also scored 3,000-plus runs in Twenty20 cricket besides bagging 68 wickets.

Following the announcement of his retirement decision, Sean Ervine took to his Twitter handle to break the news.

“Yesterday I made the biggest decision of my life. After 14 years playing county cricket I have decided to hang up my number 7 shirt,” Ervine wrote.

Over the years the all-rounder emerged as one of the most vital cogs in Hampshire cricket. Eventually, he was dropped after a string of poor performances. He had earlier moved to Derbyshire second division. However, success eluded him as he returned with scores of 2, 1, 26 and 22 respectively.

Meanwhile, Derbyshire skipper Billy Godleman said, “Sean shared with the group today that he’s had a long hard think about his career and he’s decided to retire as of today from the game”.

“Although he’s only been with us for a couple of games, we’ve all played against him for many years, and he’s been a fantastic performer and most importantly a really good solid cricket man and one of the good guys in professional cricket,” he said.

Meanwhile, in another development, former Hampshire skipper Jimmy Adams announced his decision to call it quits at the end of the ongoing season. He made his Test debut back in 2002 and went on to score 14,000 first-class runs.

Sean Ervine proved to be a vital cog in the wheel for Zimbabwe during his heydays for the national team. He bows down while announcing his retirement from professional cricket.
