Surrey all-rounder Gareth Batty, in a recent interview, opened up on how the Coronavirus may have implications of veteran players such as himself, as the upcoming English county season looks in danger. While the domestic cricket in England starts from May and goes on until September, that won’t be the case this season though.

Due to the coronavirus, England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have been forced to suspend all forms of professional cricket until May 28.

The decision comes as a big setback for experienced campaigners such as Batty, who was supposed to feature in his last county season this term.

Aged 42, the off-spinner had already signed a 12-month contract extension with Surrey last season and he fears he won’t be able to play professional cricket again, due to the coronavirus.

Batty, who last played international cricket in 2016, sat down for a chat with talksport2 and opened up about the grim situation that he’s facing.

“I might never play cricket again. I’ll be brutally honest, I’m nowhere, I don t know what to do,” he said.

Having amassed 261 caps in First-class cricket, and 271 in List-A matches, after a 23-year-long career, Batty revealed how such a break in cricket can affect players psychologically.

He stated, “Most of the time, a player can go out and do something about it. They can go out and get fitter or practice more. Your career is in your hands. At this moment in time, it is not. It has been taken away. And rightly so.”

Batty further continued, “We’ve all got to pull together. The ECB will be under huge strain. Everybody within the cricket community, we’ve got to fund-raise and make sure that we look after our game. It means rolling sleeves up and painting the sight screens.”
