Cricket South Africa (CSA) are reportedly set to rope in former Proteas batsman and coach Gary Kirsten as a mentor to team director Enoch Nkwen for the upcoming series against England. The Proteas will host England for a four-match Test series, starting on Boxing Day in Cape Town. With just a few days remaining before the series starts, they are more than unlikely to appoint a head coach.

Kirsten, who was head coach of India and South Africa, is currently working with the Durban Heat in the Mzansi Super League. He will be the head coach of the Welsh Fire in next year’s The Hundred – the England and Wales Cricket Board’s new limited-overs tournament.

Gary Kirsten is one of the most sought after coaches in the world after his stunning success with India. He was in charge of the Indian team from 2008 to 2011 and had enjoyed unprecedented success, guiding the team to ICC World Cup in 2011 and the pinnacle of Test rankings. He has also worked with Delhi Daredevils and Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League.

The legendary batsman confirmed that he hadn’t yet held any talks with CSA, but that he would be interested in helping South African cricket get back on its feet provided there was a bigger picture in place.

“I have not been approached by CSA but have been asked, by others, if I would be interested,” he said according to ESPNCricinfo. “I would always be willing to help where people think I can add value. It would, however, have be part of a bigger process to the commitment to rebuild a solid system.”

South Africa, meanwhile, have not opened their account in World Test Championship. They opened their campaign with a 3-0 whitewash in India. Overall, they have lost five successive Tests this year.
