Away from the hustles and bustles of international cricket, discarded India opener Gautam Gambhir has decided to do his bit for the society. The left-handed batsman has shown his patriotism on several occasions by coming out in support of the soldiers and has now started a free community kitchen in West Delhi through the Gautam Gambhir foundation.

The 35-year old took to Twitter to say that launching the daily free kitchen is an attempt to win hearts and beat hunger after winning various trophies on the cricket field.

“Won World Cups, Won IPLs, beaten opponents. Now time 2 win hearts & beat hunger. Community Kitchen #1 by Gautam Gambhir Foundation,” tweeted Gambhir.

Gambhir himself supervised the Day 1 operations of the newly-launched community kitchen.

“Compassion in my heart, a plate in my hand & a prayer on my lips ‘No one should sleep hungry’ #ggf #communitykitchen1,” wrote Gambhir with a picture of him serving a poor man.

The World Cup-winning star is known for his humanitarian nature. Earlier this year, he had  pledged to bear the full expenses of the children of 25 CRPF personnel killed in an ambush by Maoists in Chhattisgarh’s south Sukma area.

Playing career:

Gambhir’s international career is totally off-track as of now. After failing to make the chances count when he was recalled to the Test team last year, the Delhi star is still waiting for a call from the national. He was one of the top-performers in this year’s Indian Premier League but was snubbed by the selectors for the ICC Champions Trophy and with the team’s top-order looking settled at the moment, any chances of him making a comeback to the national team is looking very bleak.

So far, Gambhir has represented India in 58 Tests and 147 ODIs, scoring over 9000 runs with the help of 20 centuries and 56 half-centuries. He has also played 37 T20Is and has scored 932 runs including 7 fifties.
