In a shocking development, former India cricketer and BJP politician Gautam Gambhir has received death threats in the wake of the protest across the nation. Thousands of people have hit the streets to protest against The Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019.

The Act seeks to grant Indian citizenship to refugees from Hindu, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist and Parsi communities fleeing religious persecution from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh and who entered India on or before December 31, 2014. The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was passed by Parliament a week ago and became an Act when President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent to it on November 12.

With the protests turning violent in almost all the parts of the country, several leaders have been condemning it and Gautam Gambhir also did the same. The legendary cricketer took to Twitter to condemn the violent protests and the brutality on police by the mob.

And things have now taken a scary turn as Gautam Gambhir has started receiving death threats. The ex-cricketer-turn-politician, who won the general elections from East Delhi this year, lodged a FIR with the Delhi police and has asked for more security for himself and his family.

“I have been receiving death threats for me & my family from an international number. I request you to file an FIR for the same & ensure safety and security to my family,” wrote Gautam Gambhir in a letter to DCP Shahdara District:

A two-time World Cup winner, Gautam Gambhir retired from the game last year. He last played for India in 2016. The aggressive opener was India’s top-scorer in the finals of the 2007 World T20 in South Africa and the 2011 ODI World Cup. He made 58 Test appearances for India, accumulating 4154 runs at an average of 41.95. His 147 ODI games fetched 5238 runs, while in 37 T20 Internationals, he scored 932 runs.
