Veteran cricketer George Bailey is all set to become the new selector for the Australian Cricket Team. He will join chairman of selector Trevor Hohns and head coach Justin Langer in the panel who has done some terrific job with the side in the aftermath of the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa in 2008 which saw two senior cricketers sit out for one year due to suspension.

Meanwhile, the Aussies are currently enjoying a rich vein of form. After a successful Ashes campaign in England, they routed Pakistan in T20Is and now secured a 1-0 lead in the Tests. Australia banked on a complete effort to beat Pakistan by an innings and five runs. While David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne starred with the bat, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood starred with the ball to take their side all the way.

CA to appoint George Bailey as selector

As Australia look to build a strong pool of players, they have added former skipper George Bailey in the set-up which already has Trevor Hohns and Justin Langer. As a result, Bailey will become a selector while still playing in the Big Bash League for Hobart Hurricanes and possibly for Tasmania. However, he will not be the first player to act as a national selector, with captains such as Don Bradman and most recently Michael Clarke having held the post while leading the national team.

Cricket Australia was keen to attract a player of George Bailey’s generation because of the importance of having someone on the panel with thorough knowledge of the white-ball formats as a player, particularly with tournaments such as next year’s T20 World Cup in Australia looming large. Bailey has represented Australia in five Tests, 90 ODIs, and 30 T20Is and is one of the most respected individuals in the domestic circuit.
