Fast bowling legend Glenn McGrath has restored faith in Indian bowling, despite their 10-wicket drubbing against New Zealand in the Wellington Test. New Zealand put up a total of 348 and 9/0 in the match as the visiting Indian bowlers were made to toil hard in search of wickets.

Though senior fast bowler Ishant Sharma was an exception with his five-wicket haul, McGrath believes Jasprit Bumrah just returned from injuries, and so couldn’t deliver his best.

“I still have total faith in the Indian (bowling) lineup. They had a few injuries off late. Ishant is coming back and he did get five wickets. Bumrah had a couple of injuries and he is coming back. So, I think the Indian bowling attack is world class and there is no doubt about that,” McGrath told reporters.

The Wellington Test was an all-round failure for Team India. Not only their bowlers struggled to find wickets, but collectively, India failed to breach the 200-run mark in both the innings.

Premier Indian Test batsmen Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Virat Kohli and Mayank Agarwal also struggled on a track on which New Zealand scored over 300 runs with ease.

“Conditions in New Zealand are different to that they are in Australia. In Australia, it’s quicker, bouncier pitches. In New Zealand, it swings more, seams a little bit more. It’s more like English conditions than Australian. That first pitch had grass on the deck and India lost the toss. That’s how it goes. You have got to bat really well,” McGrath said.

While most Indian bowlers struggled, Ishant picked wickets at a regular interval in Wellington. McGrath believes the lanky pacer has re-invented himself and started to do well for himself and the team.

Also, Aussie Jason Gillespie has heaped praise on Ishant, for his remarkable show with the ball.

“Ishant has a lot of experience, the way he’s comeback in the last couple years, its been impressive. I thought his career might have been finished at international level, but he has reinvented himself and he is bowling well.”

The second Test will be played at Christchurch from Friday. It will be a chance for India to level series after an overpowering defeat.
