Following the loss in World Cup and in the recent tur to India, the cricket board of South Africa has come up with the new position to make things fall in place. For the same, they have asked the former skipper Graeme Smith to take the role and help the team to come up with the good show in upcoming fixtures.
The director will be responsible for overseeing all cricket played under Cricket South Africa’s ambit, which includes the national teams, high-performance, age-group structures, and the domestic set-up.
Graeme Smith Has Got Vast Experience:
Former South Africa captain Graeme Smith is in the running to become the country’s first director of cricket, a post for which he has been interviewed by the Cricket South Africa board, according to a report on ESPNcricinfo.
The new position, which was created following the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019, will see Smith competing with Corrie van Zyl, who was originally appointed to the position, albeit in an interim capacity, before being suspended, and former national selector Hussein Manack.
The Proteas won three matches and lost five in the World Cup, finishing in seventh position in the 10-team tournament in the United Kingdom. They had also lost to Sri Lanka in a home Test series earlier this year, the first time ever that they have lost a Test series against an Asian side in South Africa.
The national team has struggled to fill the voids created by the retirements of top players such as AB de Villiers, Dale Steyn, Hashim Amla and Morne Morkel. Perhaps, this will be a good chance for Smith to recreate his magic for South Africa.
Graeme Smith has been a notable member in the world cricket for his heroics on the field. In fact, he was handed the reins at 22 – which made him his country’s youngest captain and tasked with restoring the faith of his countrymen after Hansie Cronje scenario.
