Legendary South Africa captain Graeme Smith is set to become Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) director of cricket, the governing body’s president Chris Nenzani announced on Saturday. The former captain could be formally announced as the director of cricket next week. In addition to giving update on Graeme Smith, CSA also appointed Dr Jacques Faul as acting CEO.

South Africa cricket is going through a crisis at the moment. Not only are they facing tough time on the field but also off it. With just few days left before the Test series against England starts, nothing is clear in South Africa cricket at the moment. As of now, they don’t have a selection panel. South Africa are also set to lose their title sponsor.

The relationship between CSA and broadcaster SuperSport has sunk to its lowest ebb because of disagreement over the latter’s rights to the Mzansi Super League, and the value of the rights the board are able to command going forward is likely to fall thanks to the declining fortunes of South Africa’s team. South Africa will be hoping that normalcy is restored with the latest appointments.

Smith to be named director of cricket on Wednesday:

CSA president Chris Nenzani, who addressed members of the media in Johannesburg on Saturday following a disastrous week for the organisation, confirmed that the board had a fruitful dialogue with former captain Graeme Smith. He also stated that the announcement of Smith’s appointment will be made formal on Wednesday.

“I am happy to announce that we have engaged Graeme Smith and I am confirming that by next week Wednesday all of the negotiations around the contract terms that need to take place would have been concluded,” said Nenzani.

If Smith agrees to take the job he will have just over two weeks to put a selection panel and coaching staff in place before the first of four Tests against England, starting in Centurion on December 26. The Proteas will be desperate to change their fortunes around on the field. South Africa have lost five Tests in succession in 2019 and are yet to collect any points in the World Test Championship.
