A total of 51 people have been booked by police for holding a cricket match in the Uttar Pradesh city of Greater NOIDA, as part of a clear violation of the administration’s guidelines with regards to COVID-19 on Saturday.

Greater NOIDA police have also issued guidelines challans to the owners of 17 cars which were used by the participants of the T20 match held on Friday, the Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajesh Kumar Singh said.

Among the booked 51 people, Deepak Aggarwal and Nagik Khurana have been identified as the organizers of the event.

“The cricket match was held in the Knowledge Park police station area without permission, with its lead organisers being Deepak Aggarwal and Nagik Khurana. Due to COVID-19, it is well known that everyone has to maintain social distancing and it has been made mandatory to wear masks,” Rajesh Kumar Singh was quoted as saying by India Today.

FIR has been lodged under several sections of IPL by Greater NOIDA police

Rajesh Kumar Singh added that a plethora of people had gathered for the event without even following social distancing guidelines.

“Fifty-one people have been booked and an FIR has been registered at the Knowledge Park police station,” the DCP said.

The FIR has been lodged under Indian Penal Code Sections 188 [disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), 269 [for unlawfully or negligently spreading infection of any disease dangerous to life] and 270 [for malignant act which is likely to spread the proliferation of the disease dangerous to life], the police apprised.

“Provisions under the Epidemic Diseases Act have also been invoked in the case” the police added.

Gautam Budh Nagar has thus far recorded 2569 COVID-19 cases and 23 deaths till Friday. In the wake of the steadily escalating situation, the GB police have invoked Section 144 throughout the district, which bars the assembling of more than four people at a particular place till July 31.
