Faf du Plessis cut a sorry figure as his team, the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) suffered yet another defeat, this time at the hands of Gujarat Titans (GT), in the 43rd match of the IPL 2022 which was played at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.

Du Plessis started off well by winning the toss and being a day match, chose to bat first. However, his bat didn’t speak today as he fell for a duck to Pradeep Sangwan. But then Virat Kohli and Rajat Patidar added 99 runs. Patidar made 52 in 32 balls with 5 fours and 2 sixes, as Kohli struggled to get some rhythm.

However, the former RCB captain carried on and made 58 in 53 balls, his first half-century in this IPL 2022 tournament. However, RCB looked in some danger of posting a below-par total, but Glenn Maxwell with 33 in 18 balls and Mahipal Lomror with 16* in 8 balls, took the final total to 170/6 in 20 overs.

In reply, Gujarat Titans started off well with Wriddhiman Saha (29) and Shubman Gill (31) doing well. But then the RCB spinners Wanindu Hasaranga (2/28) and Shahbaz Ahmed (2/26) came into action and GT lost 4 wickets for 95 runs in the 13th over. Hardik Pandya made 3 and Sai Sudharshan contributed 20 runs.

But then seasoned finishers Rahul Tewatia and David Miller once again bailed GT out of a mess and took them past the finishing line. Tewatia remained unbeaten on 43 in 25 balls with 5 fours and 2 sixes, while Miller made 39* in 24 balls with 4 fours and 1 six, as they added 79* unbeaten runs for the 5th wicket.

GT won the match with 3 balls and 6 wickets to spare and registered their 8th win in 9 matches this IPL 2022. After the match, Faf du Plessis talked about the team’s performance and praised Virat Kohli for his fifty.

He said: We tried to get 175-180. They bowled well in the middle and kept us down. We started well with the ball but they played under pressure really well as they are in the tournament. Patidar played really well and with confidence. After two bad performances with the bat, coming back was good. But the bowlers being taken down by good batting took it their way. There was big side on one side, and there was one over (4th last) where most balls went to the legside. (On Virat) It was a huge step in the right direction to get a solid 50. You want one of your top 4 to get the 70s in the future, so it’s good.”

RCB has now lost 5 matches in 10 played.
