Former Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni became just the fourth Indian batsman to amass 10,000 or more runs in One-day International cricket. He achieved the feat during the second ODI against England which India lost by 86 runs at Lord’s.

Dhoni reaching the landmark was perhaps the only bright spot for India on a pretty dull day for the visitors. They were the favourites to win the match especially after a dominating performance in the recently-concluded Twenty20 International series and the opening T20I.

After winning the toss, Eoin Morgan surprisingly elected to bat first. It was a good start from the English openers Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow. They shared a 69-run partnership before Kuldeep Yadav again came to bamboozle the English batters.

Test skipper Joe Root smashed a sensational century which put England in a commanding position.

David Willey struck a quickfire 50 off 31 deliveries which eventually propelled England to a competitive score of 322 runs in their allotted 50 overs.

India got off to a pretty steady start and the openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan struck some wonderful shots, to begin with. However, a horrendous shot from Rohit gave England their maiden breakthrough.

Two more wickets fell in the form of Dhawan and KL Rahul as India were reduced to 60 for three. Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina shared a brilliant 80-run stand which got India back on the track.

However, the dismissals of Kohli and Raina in quick succession again put England in the driver’s seat. Dhoni played pretty ordinary innings of 37 runs. However, it was enough to give Dhoni his 10,000th ODI run.

Harbhajan’s message to Dhoni:

It is indeed a great achievement especially given the fact that he has batted for the majority of his career at number six or seventh position.

Following his achievement, the whole cricketing fraternity congratulated Dhoni for a sensational achievement.

Harbhajan Singh took to his Twitter handle to wish the modern-day master; Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

“Congratulations @msdhoni for 10000 runs in 50 overs cricket.. great achievement.. keep shining batted at the most difficult position 5/6 where he mastered how to score runs and win games.
