At a time when BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and others are trying all they can to make the upcoming day-night Test between India and Bangladesh a hit, veteran spinner Harbhajan Singh has come up with a comment that is unlikely to go down well with others. India and Bangladesh will make their debut in the day-night Test at the Eden Gardens this week.

The day-night Test is one of the big steps taken by the governing body of the game to attract crowd to Test matches. With the advent of T20Is, Test cricket’s popularity has declined by a considerable amount. Barring the big games, the organisers have struggled to draw big crowds for the longest format of the game.

Harbhajan Singh skeptical:

Hopes are high that the day-night Test could turn things around. However, Harbhajan Singh is not very much confident as he said that the new format will not bring many spectators to the ground. The veteran believes that one way of attracting the big crowd to Test matches is to hold the games at smaller centres.

“I don’t see pink ball bringing a lot of people to the ground it might not be the case. You have to do something about Test cricket. Probably taking the game to the smaller centres where people have not seen their heroes and action,” Harbhajan Singh told reporters.

“For instance, take the game from Mohali to Amristar. Your people will come to watch it. No matter what the format is whether you play with red/pink ball will not matter to them. One of the keys is to take the game to smaller centres,” he opined.

He further said that fans will come to the ground only if two big teams play. Not only that, the legendary spinner opined that a better infrastructure is needed to attract crowd to the stadium for Test matches.

“If you have two strong teams playing against each other then only people will come to enjoy the game. Also, another big factor which I feel is that there is not much infrastructure for people. There are not good toilets and seats so people prefer to stay back in their home,” he said.
