India’s legendary off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has said that he is extremely confident about Hardik Pandya’s chances of playing for India in the T20 World Cup later this year. The ICC T20 World Cup 2020 is scheduled to take place in October and November in Australia.

Hardik has not played international cricket since September 2019 as he underwent back surgery to treat a longstanding injury. Hardik Pandya returned to the Indian side for a 3-match ODI series against South Africa at home in March. However, he was not able to get match time as the series was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic after the 1st ODI in Dharamsala was washed out on March 12.

Harbhajan Singh also said Hardik Pandya is a must-have in the T20 World Cup squad despite his long absence from the senior national team due to injury concerns.

“Hardik Pandya has not played after the World Cup. But I can give you in writing that if he is fit and irrespective of whether the IPL takes place or not, when the team will be made he will be in the team because if the team needs to maintain combination, he has to be in the team,” the off-spinner said.

“You need these kind of players. So some players cannot be judged on IPL form. It is for them who are not proven players,” Harbhajan said.

Coronavirus Threat Looms Large Over ICC T20 World Cup

With the coronavirus wreaking havoc across the world, more cricket events look set to be affected by it. As things stand, the entire world has come to a standstill, and cricket is not an exception either. All the international series and major domestic events have been called off as people stay indoors to stop the transmission of the virus.

It looks like this year’s T20 World Cup will also be affected by the coronavirus pandemic. The tournament is scheduled to take place in Australia in October-November. But while there is still some time left for the tournament to go ahead, some leading stakeholders in the game have proposed to the ICC that the T20 World Cup should be postponed for now. Reports suggest that if the tournament is cancelled this year, it is unlikely to take place before 2022.
