Cricketers joining politics is nothing new especially in India. Recently, former India opener Gautam Gambhir joined ruling party BJP. Prior to him, the likes of Mohammad Kaif, Kirti Azad, Navjot Singh Sidhu, Chetan Chauhan and MAK Pataudi had also tried out their hands at politics. Well, veteran spinner Harbhajan Singh was recently asked whether he would love to try his hands at politics. In twilight of his illustrious career, Harbhajan is set to bow out of the game sooner rather than later.

Harbhajan is unlikely to play for India again, having last played for the national team way back in 2016. He is not active in domestic circuit either although he recently turned up for Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League. The former India spinner did extremely well, helping the Super Kings to make it to the final where they lost to Mumbai Indians.

But while Harbhajan’s days in the game is more or less numbered, he has no interest in politics. The veteran star was among those who cast their votes on Sunday at Garhi village in Jalandhar in Punjab during the seventh and final phase of the 2019 Lok Sabha election.

“There are too many seasoned people in the politics. So I have no plan,” he was quoted as saying by NDTV.

Previously, there were reports suggesting that the BJP had contacted the 38-year-old in order to field him from the Amritsar Lok Sabha constituency in the state. The reports gained more prominency when he leapt in defence of BJP politician and his former teammate Gautam Gambhir. Gambhir had been involved in a heated war of words with AAP rival Atishi.

The AAP leader had earlier accused the World Cup-winning star of having two voter ID cards and accused him of circulating derogatory pamphlets with obscene remarks about her.

“I am shocked to note (the) events involving Gautam Gambhir. I know him well and he can never talk ill of any woman. Whether he wins or loses is another matter but the man is above all this,” Harbhajan had wrote on Twitter.
