High Time the Likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly Take Big Role in BCCI Administration?

The Indian cricket’s administration is perhaps as lucrative as playing for the country. The Indian administrators are some of the most well-paid individuals in this sector across the globe. The massive fan-following of this game helps the BCCI generate revenue that no country enjoys.

Not surprisingly, the cricket administration in this cricket-obsessed nation attracts the wealthy, the elite and the former player.

But unfortunately, it has rarely attracted players who did well on the field. The likes of Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev and others remaining away from the politics pretty much proves that. Well, the scenario is changing to some extent as of now.

In 2015, the legendary trio of Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman agreed to join the BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC). The job of the committee was to select the coach for the national men’s team. Ganguly is also the president of Cricket Association of Bengal. But that is the only involvement of these players as far as BCCI’s administration is concerned.

However, considering the recent unrest in the BCCI, it is high time that these celebrated players start entering the administration. The Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administration (CoA) had revamped the Indian cricket board entirely. On August 21, the BCCI accepted the new constitution which paved the way for a new dawn in the board.

As of now, the CoA has taken complete charge of the board until the new elections are held. The court had decided to bring more transparency in the board which for years managed to avoid the government’s intervention in its day-to-day affairs.

In August 2011, the then sports minister, Ajay Maken wanted to bring the BCCI under Right to Information Act (RTI) with an argument that there is “just and reasonable grounds” for this. The entire BCCI then ganged up by calling it a “government interference into the affairs of autonomous sports body”, and the National Sports Development Bill 2011 got rejected outrightly after all parties joined hands to force Union cabinet to drop the bill.

But ever since the CoA took charge of the BCCI, the board has been reduced to a group of ineligible office-bearers. As of now, nothing is clear on how the board will run in the coming years. The answer to this question will be found after the fresh elections are held.

And amidst all this, one thing that can please everyone will be to see the active involvement of the former players. There is no denying that these players have the required credentials for the posts. What further boost their chances are their spotless track record in international cricket?

The likes of Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar, Laxman, Sourav Ganguly, Anil Kumble and others made a name not only for their cricketing exploits but also for their unquestionable service.

So before the elections are held, we take a look at players who can take some big roles in the BCCI. Ganguly seems most suited for the post of BCCI president. A known leader, Ganguly has already proved his credentials by serving Cricket Association of Bengal. Sachin Tendulkar and Laxman can help him in the administrators.

On the other hand, Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, Zaheer Khan and Mohammad Kaif can serve as coaches. Kumble, India’s highest Test wicket-taker could become the head coach. On the other hand, Dravid, Zaheer and Kaif could serve as batting, bowling and fielding coach respectively. Dravid has scored more than 10,000 runs in both Tests and ODIs while Zaheer is considered one of the country’s best pacers. Kaif, on the other hand, is one of the finest fielders in the history of Indian cricket.

These appointments would perhaps be the best as far as the interest of the game is concerned.

The players would not only make the board’s function transparent but would also make sure that the game and the players’ interest is always given the priority.
