India’s batting coach Vikram Rathour has put his weight behind Rishabh Pant for delivering the goods for the team. Pant has drawn flak as he has not been consistent with his performances. In fact, the southpaw batsman has disappointed with his shot-making as he has looked to hit the ground too early. Pant has received a lot of chances and he has got the backing of the team management but his performances have not been up to the mark.

Consequently, India’s batting coach Vikram Rathour is hopeful that Pant will get more consistent with time. Pant has scored one fifty in the 15 ODI matches whereas he has scored two fifties in the 27 T20 Internationals he has played. The left-hander has an average of 26.62 in the 50-overs version and 20.5 in the shortest format of the game. Thus, Pant needs to be more consistent with his batting performances.

Pant needs to be more consistent.

“Rishabh Pant, I think we have spoken a lot about him and every press-conference I do, I face a question about him. He’s a good player. Everybody agrees on that,” Rathour said on Sunday.

“He’s working hard on his fitness. He’s played some useful innings lately. So, a lot of work. He’s practicing hard, so hoping he comes good, becomes more consistent,” Rathour added.

On the other hand, Rathour was full of praise for Shardul Thakur – the batsman. Thakur had played a cameo of 22 runs in the third T20I against Sri Lanka which had helped India cross the 200-run mark. Rathour added that Thakur has put in the hard yards in his batting.

“It’s all his good work (and) I’m not doing anything. He’s somebody who can bat-all of us knew that. In the last couple of games, he got the opportunity to show what he can do. So he gives you a great option in a late order,” said Rathour.

Meanwhile, India also tried different combinations as they promoted players like Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson in the batting order. Rathour added that we will keep noticing these experiments to continue.

“We did that in T20s because we were willing to give them some game time. So against Australia in the first game, well start with our best XI. And I think everyone will bat according to tried order. And as the series goes, will see if we can experiment and try something different,” he signed off.

India will play the first ODI against Australia at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on 14th January.
