Talking about India’s overall Test record in each decade, the team won 17 out of 64, drew 28 and lost 19 in the 70s, In 80s, India won 11 out of 81 Tests, drew 47 and lost 21 games with one ending in a tie. In the 90s, India played a total of 69 Test matches, won 18, drew 31 and lost 20. While in the 2000s the numbers improved significantly with 40 wins, 36 draws and 27 losses in 103 games.

Such has been Sourav Ganguly’s impact as a leader. He made India a top-class team in overseas conditions by knocking down the best teams off his times. We are carrying forward Sourav Ganguly’s legacy – Gautam Gambhir

Recently former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir was asked about his take on the debate, and he backed Kohli over his comments on Ganguly. Gautam Gambhir explained that almost every captain was dominating when playing in India, but Sourav Ganguly was the only skipper, who led India to victory even in overseas conditions.

“See that’s Virat Kohli’s thinking and there is no doubt that we started winning more away from home under Sourav Ganguly. Even previous Indian captains and almost every Indian captain has been dominant. From Gavaskar Ji’s time or Kapil Dev’s time till now India has been a dominant force under every captain at home, but under Ganguly’s leadership, we started winning overseas,” Gambhir said in an interview.

“If you talk from the point of view of winning away from home, I agree with Virat Kohli on what he said – that we are carrying forward Ganguly’s legacy as captain,” he added.

Well, as Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir said, the former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly helped India to win overseas and kept India on top of quite a few charts. Though there are no significant victories for India in ICC events, he made sure India became a dominant force on quite a few occasions.
