Ahead of the all-important World Cup, veteran South Africa batsman Hashim Amla has said he is hungrier than ever to be back on the field. One of the finest batsmen to have played for South Africa, Amla has looked off colour for some time now. The veteran batsman missed the ODI series against Sri Lanka and instead decided to play for Cape Cobras in order to be closer to his ill father.

Amla, however, performed extremely poor for the Cobras, scoring 92 runs at a strike rate of 83.63 with a top score of 32 in eight T20 matches. At that stage it had looked like Amla would miss out on a World Cup squad. However, the Proteas went for experience and picked Amla in the side. The right-handed batsman has now set his sight on the World Cup which could be his ODI swansong.

“Things happen that you don’t anticipate and I did not anticipate how things have gone recently. But I am a firm believer that when something happens, there is some good in it. I have had time away and now I am really looking back to wearing the green and gold again,” ICC quoted Amla as saying.

“I am hungrier than ever before, there is no doubt about that. I have been blessed to have this shirt for a while but the time off has made me want to come back stronger,” he added.

One of the most experienced players in the South Africa team, Amla has so far played twice in the World Cup. In the previous edition, he helped South Africa make it to the semifinal. Amla will be looking to make the most of this opportunity and lead the nation to its first-ever World Cup. The Proteas will be opening their campaign against hosts and favourites England on May 30.
