I Bring 150 Kmph To The Table, Have More Variety Now: Varun Aaron

Following his impressive performances for Jharkhand in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy, discarded India pacer Varun Aaron has said he has added more variety to his bowling arsenal.

Varun Aaron burst onto the scene when India needed some quality pacers to replace their long-serving pace spearhead Zaheer Khan. And Aaron looked like the one who could go on to lead the attack. Pace, bounce, strength- the right-arm pacer had it all.

He grabbed the eyeballs when he hit 153 kph during the 2010-11 Vijay Hazare Trophy final against Gujarat. The early promise, however, was not the precursor of the things that were to follow.

Aaron was fast-tracked into the Indian team after his impressive performance in domestic cricket. He made his ODI debut in October 2011 against England. A Test debut followed a month later against West Indies. However, his downfall was as quick as his rapid rise as his inconsistent bowling and injury soon saw him falling down the pecking order.

Despite making his international debut seven years ago, he has played only 9 Tests and as many ODIs till date with his last India appearance coming in November 2015. He, however, kept himself in the reckoning by playing in the Indian Premier League.
From 2014 to 2016, he was a regular feature in the Royal Challengers Bangalore squad and was one of the fastest bowlers in the league. Last year, he impressed for Kings XI Punjab. But things went haywire this year as he went unsold at the 2018 IPL players auction.

But Aaron has not given up and is toiling hard in domestic cricket to don the Indian jersey again. He has taken 10 wickets in 5 matches of the ongoing Vijay Hazare trophy including three consecutive three-wicket hauls.

Delighted with his efforts so far, he opened up on what he can bring to a team’s bowling attack.

“Yes, it has been good and I am delighted to be bowling again with my old mate Rahul Shukla. We not just want to qualify but aim to win the competition,” he told Sportstar.

“I bring 150 kmph to the table. I have more variety now,” he added.  “I bowl the leg-cutter and the slower one better now. Previously, I largely used to swing the ball away, now I bring it in too.”

Prior to playing in Vijay Hazare Trophy, he had an impressive outing for Leicestershire in County Championship. Speaking about the experience, he said:

“The experience matured me as a bowler. You travel so much, play in different cities, have to adapt.”

The pacer concluded by saying that the urge to play for India again has kept him going.

“I wouldn’t be playing cricket if I had given up hopes of playing for India.”
