Before the start of the 2017/18 season, Karn Sharma decided to switch his base to Vidarbha. He couldn’t play first few games for his side due to his commitments with India A. He was even close to a national call after he shone in Duleep Trophy but what came next was a big surprise.

He could just take 14 wickets for his new side in four games and was later dropped from the side for the semi-final against Karnataka. Before the start of the season, he came into the team as a professional and his dropping was a big surprise. Karn is not a part of playing XI in the final as well, but the all-rounder is keen to perform and wants to keep the things simple,

“Those things (selection) are not in my hands. All I can do is play and perform. That’s all I can do. It’s there at the back of the mind but I want to keep things simple,” he told Sportstar.

It has been a fairytale year for Karn. He emerged out as the highest paid Indian player in the IPL auction early this year and was paid an amount of Rs 3.2 Crore by Mumbai Indians. He was not given a chance right away and had to wait for his opportunity. Once he got a chance, he bowled brilliantly, and his best performance came in the second qualifier, where he bowled a spell of 4-0-16-4 against Kolkata Knight Riders to lead his side to the final of the tournament.

On the advice of Paras Mhambrey – former Mumbai Indians coach, he quit his job a Railways and joined Vidarbha. Incidentally, Mhambrey is now not a part of Vidarbha coaching staff.

Karn, who was in contention to be selected in national side a few days back, feels that he could have done better in the opportunities he got at international level,

“I don’t have an answer. I could have done better but then opportunities come and go. I could not do it that time. Whenever I get a chance, I will do well. There’s nothing negative about it, but yes, even I know I could not do it as per expectations. There’s a bit of pain,” he added.

Karn Sharma has again gone backwards and has lost the race to all the players in the side at the national level. He could have been in the national side now had he performed in the ‘A’ series, but a failure in continuing his form has seen him coming back to the domestic grind.

He would hope to do well in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy next year as it is no doubt that T20 cricket is his fortress and in the IPL auction 2018 as well, he might emerge out as one of the highest paid players again.
