I Don't Believe in Farewell Matches - Sourav Ganguly on Yuvraj Singh's Retirement

Whenever a big player bids adieu to the game, there is a lot of talk about his farewell match. Similarly, when Yuvraj Singh decided to bid adieu to the game, there was the talk of the special farewell match. Yuvraj Singh revealed that he was asked to clear the Yo-Yo Test by the Board of Control for Cricket in India to get into the team. However, when Yuvraj Singh went on to pass the fitness test, he didn’t get a chance to play.

In fact, there is no doubt that Yuvraj Singh would have liked to retire from the ground. However, the runs were not coming for him at the domestic circuit. Former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly under whom Yuvraj Singh made his International debut against Australia in the Champions Trophy stated that he doesn’t believe in retirement matches.

Yuvraj Singh didn’t ask for the farewell match.

Yuvraj Singh had last played in the Indian colours when India played against West Indies at Sir Vivian Richards International Stadium on 30th June 2017. Thus, it was more than two years since he had not played for the national side. Furthermore, the southpaw didn’t get his chances to play in the Indian Premier League as he played only four matches for Mumbai Indians.

“I don’t think so [deserves a retirement match]. I don’t believe in these retirement matches. If it falls in the course of your continuation as a player… of you being a part of the team… part of a normal system of Test or ODI… then fine,” Ganguly said on a Facebook Live for ICC Cricket World Cup 2019.

“Whatever he has achieved as a player will not go down if he doesn’t get a farewell match. I don’t believe in it. He’s been a terrific player… a match winner. He should be very proud of what he has achieved,” he added.

On the other hand, Yuvraj Singh had made a roaring start to his International career. The left-hander had impressed one and all with his knock of 84 runs against Australia in his debut innings while playing in the Champions Trophy.

“I have many, many fond memories of Yuvraj Singh. He started under my captaincy. We went to Australia and he was the Man of the Match on debut. We beat the best team of our generation in a Champions Trophy quarter-final. But my best memory of Yuvraj would be the six sixes in the World T20 in England.”

Meanwhile, Sourav Ganguly and Yuvraj Singh share a great bonhomie with each other. Ganguly had backed Yuvraj to come good and the left-hander was able to deliver the goods for the team with his consistent performances.
