Hanuma Vihari scored his maiden Test ton to lift the middle-order once again as India posted 416 runs in the first innings of the second Test in Jamaica. He shared a valuable partnership with Ishant Sharma to post 416 runs before Jasprit Bumrah showdown.

Ishant and Vihari added 112 for the eighth wicket to bail India out of difficult situations. The visitors lost Rishabh Pant in the first ball of the day when Jason Holder cleaned him up. But Hanuma Vihari stood tall and kept up his good work to lead India’s middle-order.

Speaking at the end of the day’s play, Vihari dedicated the century to his father who passed away when Vihari was only 12. The Andhra batsman also hoped to make his father proud and noted that it is an emotional day for him.

“Actually, my dad passed away when I was 12 so ever since, I have decided that when I play international cricket I want to dedicate my first hundred to him. Today is an emotional day and I hope he is proud wherever he is and I’m really happy that I achieved that,” Vihari said.

Hanuma Vihari who resumed his innings from 42 runs on day two was not able to sleep properly before his ton. He also credited Ishant Sharma for standing tall alongside him who also brought his first Test fifty. Vihari’s inclusion in the Test team has brought stability in the middle-order and he will hope to carry on the excellent work.

“When I was batting overnight on 42, I did not sleep really well as my thoughts were obviously running on how to get a big score today. I’m happy that I could cross that three-figure mark and credit should go to Ishant as well — the way he batted. I’m really happy that I could get my first hundred, especially on those conditions. It gives me a lot of satisfaction,” Vihari concluded.
